Privacy Policy — Lantern browser extension

Lantern is a browser extension that shows the locations of automated license plate readers (ALPR) and surveillance cameras from public OpenStreetMap data.

What we collect

Nothing. Lantern has no accounts, no analytics, and no tracking. There is no Lantern server that receives your data. We, the developers, never see your location, your searches, or your browsing.

How your data is used

• Location. When you click "Use my location," your browser's location is used only on your device to work out the map area to look up. That area (a bounding box) is sent to the public OpenStreetMap query service (Overpass) to fetch nearby cameras — exactly as any map lookup would. Your precise location is not stored by the extension and is never sent to us.
• Addresses & selections. An address you type, or text you right-click to check, is sent to the public OpenStreetMap geocoder (Nominatim) to find that place, and nowhere else.
• Your saved "home" area (optional) is stored locally in your browser only, so the toolbar badge and new-camera alerts can work. It is never uploaded.
• Map tiles are loaded from CARTO, and the public camera total is read from bodhin.org. These requests contain no personal information about you.

Third-party services

Lantern queries public infrastructure — OpenStreetMap (Overpass, Nominatim), CARTO map tiles, and bodhin.org — subject to their own terms. Camera data is © OpenStreetMap contributors under the ODbL.

Data sharing & selling

We do not sell, rent, or share your data. There is nothing to sell — we don't collect any.
